Is any one else aware that pinching on St. Patrick's day is based on political/religious strife in Ireland?

I understand that pinching for a lack of green and punching for wearing orange stems from the conflict between the Catholics (green) and the protestants (orange), and the conflict in Ireland. Is any one else aware of this or have any thoughts on the matter?
